Utilizing a simple non-toxic reagent, DNA can be prepared from whole blood, buccal epithelial cells and other biological specimens stored on FTA coated paper. The processing of samples by this method provides the highest quality DNA template for PCR amplification.
FTA® Cards provide a safe, secure and reliable method for the collection, transport, and safe room temperature storage of DNA. When cells are applied to FTA Cards, the cells are lysed and the nucleic acids are immobilized and stabilized within the FTA Card's matrix.
FTA® is a chemical treatment, it allows for the rapid isolation of pure DNA. When samples are applied to FTA®-treated paper, cell lysis occurs and high molecular weight DNA is immobilized within the matrix. Amplification or restriction enzyme digestion can be performed directly in situ off the treated paper.

The DNA remains tightly bound to the FTA matrix during processing. To facilitate its application for RFLP analysis, the DNA can be easily removed from the FTA matrix by centrifugation, following in situ restriction endnuclease digestion. FTA Products are available from Fitzco.
